Cover Songs by Country & Western Artists: Singers, Musicians, and Songwriters

Country music, much like folk music, is at the roots of much of the rock music that many consider "new music" from the past several decades. If you have picked up an acoustic guitar, it is nearly impossible not to think of the country standards that have been performed with this instrument. When artists like Bob Dylan or the Byrds name their influences, it is impossible not to notice country songwriters and performers like Merle Haggard and Hank Williams. Perhaps it took Fifties artists like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash to bring country music into the mainstream of new music, but the country genre is present under the surface of many contemporary acts. Some, like Bob Dylan, have gradually returned to their roots and played in a more straightforward country style as their careers have progressed. Others, like Uncle Tupelo, have used their country influences as a springboard for finding their own unique styles. Uncle Tupelo is actually classified as "alternative country," as they integrate both country and alternative rock music influences. Their first big single and their most notable cover song is the Carter Family's "No Depression." Their performance was able to take a song that was written about the Great Depression and transform it into a track about the mental state of depression. This is songwriting and acoustic cover song performance at its best, much like Johnny Cash's interpretation of "Personal Jesus," a song about taking drugs on which he imbued more directly spiritual implications.

The Laptop Sessions cover song music video blog offers an array of free videos that include not only country songs but more often songs -- and songwriters -- who have been influenced by classic country. You may not find any contemporary country artists represented on the blog, but you will certainly find new rock music whose songwriting has been influenced by country in some way.
